چکیده

Most hypogean environments particularly caves, are characterized by a stable temperature, usually in the range of 10±15 ± C, and high relative humidity. These ecosystems, when an allochthonous input of organic matter is present, seem to favor the growth of heterotrophic bacteria, from which actinomycetes predominate. Streptomyces species are particularly abundant and, in some cases, can be found as monospecific colonies. The mechanisms involved in colonization and growth are unknown, but microclimate and carbon sources can play an important role.

Subterranean Ants: The Case of Aphaenogaster cardenai (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

Recently, a series of systematized studies of the Milieu Souterrain Superficiel (MSS) are being carried in several enclaves of the Iberian Peninsula, which have entailed the finding of the enigmatic ant Aphaenogaster cardenai Espadaler, 1981, hitherto considered as hypogean, in a mountain range far away from its known distribution area. Its ecological role and its possible area of distribution ...

Interspecies interactions of halophilic and halotolerant actinomycetes: An example from a salt

Interspecies interaction of actinomycetes will express new gene clusters and may therefore affect the pigmentation, sporulation and production of secondary metabolites. Actinomycetes strains were isolated from Howze Soltan Salt Lake. Binary actinomycete interaction assay was conducted to evaluate its effect on colony morphology and antibiotic production. The molecular identification of the indu...

Discovery of novel metabolites from marine actinomycetes.

Recent findings from culture-dependent and culture-independent methods have demonstrated that indigenous marine actinomycetes exist in the oceans and are widely distributed in different marine ecosystems. There is tremendous diversity and novelty among the marine actinomycetes present in marine environments. Progress has been made to isolate novel actinomycetes from samples collected at differe...

The effects of long-term fasting and subsequent refeeding on digestive physiology and energy metabolism

of fasting are experienced by numerous subterranean (i.e. hypogean) aquatic organisms, as many groundwater ecosystems are characterized yearly by severely limited food supplies due to lack of autotrophic production and sporadic allochthonous input (Poulson, 1964; Hüppop, 1985; Hervant et al., 1997). Even in highly productive hypogean biotopes, food resources may be extremely patchy (Malard and ...

Saline Waters: a Potential Source of Actinomycetes Possessing Antibacterial Activity

Microorganisms growing in saline environments represent an important source of biologically active compounds. Such environments are distributed all over the world and mainly include oceans, coastal and deep sea locations, soda lakes, soda deserts as well as artificial salterns. Many antibacterial, antifungal, anti-tumor, cytotoxic and photo protective compounds have been isolated till date from...
